Hearts is a celebrated four-player trick-taking card game where the primary objective is evasion: dodging penalty cards while forcing opponents to take unwanted tricks. Played with a standard 52-card deck, each hand challenges you to manage risk, track remaining suits, and make calculated sacrifices across every trick.

While tower defense enthusiasts on Bloons Tower Defense often spend their time setting dart monkeys and optimizing defensive choke points, classic card strategy demands a very similar mindset. In both games, success comes from anticipating future threats, managing limited resources, and planning several turns ahead to prevent disaster before it strikes.

Every hand begins with the strategic pass, where players exchange three cards to reshape their hands. Once play starts with the two of clubs, the tension builds as players carefully bleed out high cards, attempt to void suits, and avoid the devastating penalty points lurking in hearts and spades.

How to play

A standard match of Hearts pits four players against each other in individual competition:

  • Card Passing: Select three cards to pass to an opponent at the beginning of each deal, dumping high cards or creating voids in specific suits.
  • Opening the Round: The player holding the two of clubs must lead the first trick. All players must follow suit if they hold a club.
  • Following Suit: You must always play a card matching the suit led if you have one. If you are void in that suit, you can discard any card, including penalty cards.
  • Breaking Hearts: Hearts cannot be led until a heart has been discarded on an earlier trick or the leader has only hearts remaining.
  • Scoring: Each heart taken in a trick awards one penalty point. The dreaded Queen of Spades carries thirteen penalty points. If a player pulls off the daring feat of collecting all twenty-six penalty points in a single deal (known as Shooting the Moon), they score zero while each opponent receives twenty-six points.

Strategy and tips

Winning consistently against capable opponents requires discipline and attentive card counting:

  • Void suits early: Passing all cards in a short suit gives you an immediate discard outlet, letting you dump dangerous high cards when opponents lead that suit.
  • Protect your high spades: Holding the Ace or King of Spades is extremely dangerous unless you also hold several low spades to shield them from the Queen.
  • Track the Queen of Spades: Always watch whether the Queen has been played. Once she is discarded, high-value spades become safe trick winners.
  • Watch for moon shooters: If an opponent begins aggressively winning every trick and taking all early hearts, do not discard penalty cards blindly—keep a high card ready to stop them from securing the full run.
